Dr. Etessam gives you a variety of services designed to maintain your oral health and to prevent future problems. A wide variety of treatments are available to you so that you can receive care promptly and get back to your normal life.
Your Initial Comprehensive Exam and Periodic, or Recare Exams are the cornerstones to good prevention. When Dr. Eetessam performs the comprehensive exam and yearly check up exams, he will always recommend for an Oral Cancer Screening exam as well as a Head and Neck exam. This is probably the most important preventive service that is often overlooked elsewhere.
Sealants are the best protection for the chewing surfaces of teeth! Most dental decay forms in the crevices of teeth, where food and bacteria congregate and is not easily brushed away. Sealants are a plastic type resin that is flowed into these grooves to prevent the decay from starting. It is important to get sealants soon after the permanent teeth are erupted on children. While we normally seal permanent teeth, it can also be desirable to place sealants on baby teeth as well.
Why place Sealants?
Sealants are a non-invasive, easy and affordable way to prevent decay in the most commonplace decay starts – in the grooves of teeth. If decay starts in a tooth, the tooth will never be the same. Once a filling is placed, it most assuredly will need to be replaced because of wear, breakage or leakage. Every time a tooth is filled, it becomes a larger filling, and additional trauma to a tooth. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could prevent this? Sealants are just one way.
Things to remember about sealants:
• Seal the tooth as soon as it erupts before decay has a chance to start.
• Sealants can be pulled out by sticky foods and candy.
• Sealants do not prevent decay that forms BETWEEN teeth…only flossing and good oral hygiene can do that.
• Sealants are EXCELLENT prevention for top surfaces of teeth.
• Sealants are not just for kids! Any tooth with deep grooves is a candidate for sealing
Most of us are familiar about fluoride treatments, but never fully understand their benefit. Fluorides not only protect our teeth from decay, but also help with sensitive teeth. There are various forms of fluoride available.
We routinely perform Fluoride Treatments for children at their prophy (cleaning) appointment. It takes about 2 years for enamel to fully mature even after the tooth is erupted, so it is very important to give the teeth the protection of fluoride. For more information about fluorides, check out the American Dental Associations web site: www.ada.org.
We now offer Waterlase.
Periodontal disease (also called gum disease or gingivitis) refers to the infection of the supportive tissues of the mouth due to toxic bacteria found in plaque. Many individuals suffer from some degree of gum disease, and if left untreated, gum disease can cause tooth loss, break down of the soft tissue in the mouth and jaw and other significant health problems. Dr. Etessam assesses your periodontal health and if needed, conducts the appropriate therapy to restore gums and supportive tissues.
Now we offer it with waterlase and this is how its done.
You will receive a thorough Periodontal Health Screening upon your initial visit, and with every other Recare Exam. This includes a full mouth examination and measuring of your gums. We compare our notes with current X rays to be sure you are fully aware of your periodontal health status and needs.
Arestin® (minocycline HCl 1mg) microspheres is a treatment for chronic periodontitis, an infection of the gums that can lead to tooth loss. Research has shown periodontitis may be linked to other serious diseases such as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes. Microsphere technology enables extended release of the antibiotic minocycline to effectively kill the germs that cause periodontal disease.
Treatment with Arestin® (minocycline HCl 1mg) microspheres is fast, easy and doesn’t cause discomfort. Treating periodontal disease with Arestin and scaling and root planing will help you manage chronic periodontist more effectively than scaling and root planing alone. You’ll also be less likely to lose your teeth. Patients treated with Arestin experience minimal side effects. Arestin does not require bandages or stitches. Arestin is bioadhesive and bioresorbable. It will not leak, fall out, or leave anything to be removed by the dentist or hygienist in a follow-up visit. Treating periodontitis with Arestin plus SRP can keep this chronic disease from progressing to the point where surgery is needed. Arestin doesn’t require anesthesia because application is comfortable.

Sometimes damage to a tooth makes extraction the most appropriate treatment for getting you back to optimal health. Dr. Etessam can perform the procedure right here at Naples Dental Art Center, rather than having to refer you to another provider, and we can discuss further treatment options for completing your smile.
Do you still have your wisdom teeth? Have you been putting off their removal? Dr. Etessam and the Naples Dental Art Center team can help. At some point in your life, most everyone requires that his or her wisdom teeth be extracted as a measure of preventative dentistry. A number of painful and lasting problems can occur due to the arrival of wisdom teeth. But with today’s dental technology, this procedure has been improved to maximize your comfort and speed along your recovery time.
Before extracting your wisdom teeth, Dr. Etessam will administer a local or general anesthetic, based on your own needs and patient history. Then he will open up the gum tissue over the tooth, remove any bone covering the tooth, separate any connective tissue, and remove the tooth itself. If necessary, Dr. Etessam will use stitches to close up the surgical wound.
In most cases, your recovery from wisdom tooth extraction will only last a few days. Your Naples Dental Art Center team will provide with you with detailed information on the do’s and don’ts of recovery, and you will be prescribed medication to manage any pain. Finally, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you’re no longer at risk for the many problems wisdom teeth can present!
Damage to the nerve tissue inside of a tooth sometimes requires a root canal procedure. Despite the tales you may have heard regarding the procedure, most root canals are minimally uncomfortable, especially compared to the pain and discomfort you may be feeling before the procedure. Dr. Etessam takes advantage of advances in technology and dental techniques that make root canal procedures more effective while taking less time.
A root canal involves removing the soft tissue within the tooth – the pulp – when it has become infected and inflamed. Dr. Etessam gently files the infected tissue out of the root canals of the tooth (this is where the procedure gets its name) and fills the void with an inert material. The procedure is completed with the placement of a filling or in some cases, a crown.
When decay and bacteria are removed from a cavity, the area is then filled with a material that will seal and protect the structure of your tooth. This way, your risk for further decay is minimized.
This is how we do it with waterlase.
Many people who notice chipped or cracked teeth, but don’t remember when the injury occurred, damaged their teeth while they were sleeping. Grinding or clenching your teeth during the night will cause your teeth to chip, crack and even break. To keep you from seriously damaging your teeth, we recommend a dental appliance called a night-guard. A custom fitted nightguard protects your teeth from grinding & clenching in your sleep.
Dr. Etessam takes great care in making sure you have a proper fit to prevent pain in your jaw joint. Do you suffer from headaches? You may find that a side benefit of your nightguard is headache prevention. Many headaches start during the night, caused by the extreme pressure generated as you grind and clench your teeth. Ask your Naples Dental Art Center team about having a nightguard custom created for you.
